any tips on how to quit smoking and drinking?

Posted on Aug 24, 2008 under quit smoking tips | 3 Comments

i'm feeling very unhealthy lately and want to quit both habits. i don't like either anymore. smoking leaves me with chest infections and drinking (only when i go out) leaves me bloated.

any tips or advice on how to do this successfully?

Just stop smoking coz it's minging. You look silly, you smell hanging and it's bad for your health. So just give it up. If it's hard to do then just keep a cig in your handbag and think to yourself "if I want one it's there" And that should help you. If you didn't have a cig with you, you'd be panicking and asking every tom, dick and harry for a cig.
As for drinking, just keep on doing it, life's too short. Besides, it's the only way a guy like me can kop off with a girl like you. So get them down you and have some fun. You're only young once.

What do you believe is the most successful or best smoking cessation (quitting smoking) program?

Posted on Aug 24, 2008 under quit smoking programs | 7 Comments

As a smoker of many years and a explorer of the available cessation "programs" I offer my personal BIASED opinion. I have "explored" (because I am still smoking) many "programs" from hypnosis, cold turkey, patches, gum the list goes on….I have come to my own personal conclusion that none of them work UNLESS "you" are ready and WANT to quit. If you are ready and WANT to free yourself from this "habit/addiction" it is MY experience that the most helpful program for me was "the pill" I recommend you research "chantix" it actually blocks the receptors in the brain from the nicotine "reward" I used it, it worked, I went from a four pack a day habit to ZERO cigarettes in less than two weeks with no adverse side effects, and the ONLY reason I resumed my "habit" was my conclusion that I really did not WANT to eliminate smoking from my routine/life. In closing, I hope I am getting my point across, as long as you are convicted in your desire to eliminate smoking from your life, it can be done. As for my "program" that was successful, Chantix did what it claimed to do. I on the other hand found the psychological connection with smoking to be stronger than my physical addiction. I hope you have the psychological DESIRE to eliminate nicotine, and find a "program" that works for you.

can u give me at least 10 "quit smoking tips" that i could paste on every wall in my house?

Smoking started with my parents, all their 7 childrens smokes too including me…We all tried quitting and it happens every New years eve…but later on we sneak and hide in places where we cd smoke and in just 2 or 3 weeks, smoking is a normal scenario again.

Chew gum

I am not able to use nicotine aids due to medical reasons. Does anyone have a natural remedy for quitting smoking?

Chantix (prescription) worked great for me — heavy smoker
for more than 45 years — check with your Doctor, it isn't a
patch and may work for you too.

I want to quit smoking but I always seem to fail! Does anybody have any tips?

Posted on Aug 22, 2008 under quit smoking tips | 50 Comments

I want to quit smoking to save money and for the sake of my health but every time I give up i get paranoid and angry at the slightest thing! I think half of it is all in my head, I convince myself that life is not worth living without smoking.
Any ideas, tips or suggestions?

Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves.
Congratulate yourself on having the desire to stop - then you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It's just so easy to start thinking that just one won't hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don't have just one. Beware - alcohol will weaken your resolve.
Here's a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It's not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something', which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.

After we have stopped for a while we will begin to feel that just one wont to any harm.
All that leads to is a desire for just another one. We must guard very strongly against the desire to have just one.

Are smoking members of Alcoholics Anonymous an indication of the effectiveness of 12 Step programs?

Posted on Aug 22, 2008 under quit smoking programs | 4 Comments

Most true alcoholics do not die from alcohol abuse, they die from the complication of years of nicotine addiction. If these alcoholics can use 12 step programs to quit drinking alcohol, why cannot they also use that same AA doctrine for smoking cessation? It makes sense to me that while addressing the area of the brain that is responsible for addiction, and truly claim to have arrested their disposition for addiction, they would also quit smoking as well? What is the ultimate goal in abstaining from addictions to deadly substances like alcohol? Could it be to save their life? Why do 12 step programs brag about success in addiction, and ultimately die from smoking cigarettes, like their founder Bill Wilson? How effective are 12 step programs? Could this be AAers deadly self-will at work?

Actually most true alcoholics, if they don't stop drinking, will kill their liver and their health generally due to not taking care of themselves properly. While most alcoholics are also smokers, the two addictions are physiologically and psychologically distinct. One important difference is that an active alcoholic is generally unable to take care of themselves and their daily responsibilities, while tobacco does not generally interfere with these things - and that is a big reason why alcohol abuse is the more serious problem, and is the sole problem that AA seeks to help its members treat.

The fact that many former alcoholics die from smoking is actually a measure of success - they didn't die from drinking, and they managed to live productive lives after their recovery from active alcohol dependency.

How did you quit smoking need tips and ideas .?

Chantix. It's a prescription that is very effective.

does your body spread out when you quit smoking?

Posted on Aug 21, 2008 under quit smoking programs | 3 Comments

I was in a smoking cessation program online and someone in there said that they didn't gain weight, but they "spread out." They were told from their physical trainer that this happens when you quit because your body relaxes itself. Ever since I quit I have felt like my face has been puffier, yet I now weight much less than I did when I was actually smoking. Am I just being paranoid or what?

Yep, paranoid. Don't start smoking again. You look much more intelligent without cigarettes! That's worth any imagined puffiness.
