any tips on how to encourage stepdaughter to quit smoking in pregnancy?

Posted on Aug 29, 2008 under quit smoking tips |

my stepdaughter is about 18 weeks pregnant. she has high blood pressure and smokes. i know it is hard to quit because she is around it at her in-laws and friends house. i worry alot about her health and the babies health. can anyone give me advice or tips on helping her quit?

you could tell her that if she keeps it up she could kill her baby! the baby could come out with underdeveloped lungs. the baby could be born and seem perfectly healthy like my daughter and get respatory infections, colds, and infections all of sorts easily. and yes its my fault becuz i smoked. shes also under weight due to eating less becuz she is sick so often. it breaks my heart everytime she gets sick cuz i know if it weren't for myselfishness she'd be healthier. i no longer smoke btw. and i don't take my bany around people smoking. i make everyone wash their hands before holding her. also my whole family smokes so i know its hard but you gotta do whats best for your kids.

tell her how horribly it will affect the baby. that it may have many health problems. make it sound convincing. take her to the doctor to see if she and the baby is healthy.

If she talks to her OB there is a medicine that they can put her on that just knocks out the cravings. Infortunatly the decision has to be all hers, no one can do it for her and no matter how she tries to do it, it won't be easy.

I smoked for 4 years before becoming pregnant and I finally quit! It took me awhile but I couldn't deal with the thought of harming my child anymore….I quit cold turkey and haven't touched one since!

Good luck to you and your family!

There's not a whole lot that you can say to her, other than the obvious - that smoking will harm her baby. I thinks he probably needs to talk to other people who have smoked while pregnant to see what kind of side effects smoking had on their babies. Hearing it from you won't be as effective as hearing it from someone else who may regret smoking while pregnant!

Do some research, find information that explains why it's soo important to stop smoking. Also, look into the effects of high blood pressure, that's really serious too.

If you give her the info, and she ignores it, then, you can't do anything about it, unfortunetly the baby will suffer!

Take her to a doctor that will tell her just what smoking will do to her baby.
Tell her to stop being selfish and to quit smoking… It's only 9 months and after that, she can pick up the nasty habit again.
That probably wouldn't work though :P

Quitting smoking is SO difficult. It's not really the nicotine addiction but just the habit of smoking that is so hard to get over.

When I became pregnant, I had to cut down on cigarettes before I completely stopped. I went from a pack a day to 5 a day in a week. When my parents learned I was pregnant, they flat out said "That means no smoking." I said "ok." Sometimes people just need a little firmness. Don't make it a suggestion. Also, encourage her to talk to her inlaws about not smoking around her. Hopefully they will want what is best for the baby. If asked, I am sure they will take it outside or to another part of the house. Good luck and I hope this helps.

If she really cares about an addiction to cigarettes more than her baby then she definately has her priorities messed up. I would definatley tell her what harm smoking can do to her baby. Maybe go with her to a doctors appt and tell the doctor she smokes and ask the doctor (in front of her) how it can affect her babies health.
