Quit smoking?…any tips or ways to do so?
Posted on Aug 17, 2008 under quit smoking tips |I've been a smoker for about 5-to-6 years now and feel I should quit.
Would anyone have any tips, ways, and stories or testmonies to share on quiting smoking? It would be a great help, thanks.
First and foremost, to be successful, you have to want to quit for YOU, not because someone else wants you too. Untill you are ready to quit, you may as well not try.
I smoked 3-4 packs a day for over 20 years. I had my doc prescribe Wellbutrin (sp?) and took that for three weeks and quit smoking.
I then used COMMIT lozenges for about 2 weeks and havent smoked in almost three years.
Also, drink a ton of water. The more water you drink, the faster the toxins get out of your system. Lifesavers, mints, little hard candies will help also.
Whatever you do, dont eat everything in the house LOL.
I am not going to lie to you, it was the hardest thing I have ever done. All I can say is quit until you suceed. Good luck and I will be hoping you can do it.

Best I used was at start of each day write on packet how many cigarettes in packet. At end of day count how many left. Make up daily chart for cigs smoked, trying to reduce every day by when had desire for smoke hold out for another 15 mins or half hour. This reduced me from a packet a day to 2 cigarettes a day in 3 weeks. Hardest part was giving up those last 3 -GOOD LUCK

Smoked 28 years…..tried everything…..Gum was chewed in addition to smoking which is dangerous…..cold turkey worked for 9 days…..threat of fiancee leaving[I stopped on my wedding day [bad time to be grouchy on honeymoon]friend did hypnosis which worked for him,not me…….after several tries ….just being aware of every cigarette and counting[even going "lighter" and smoking half cigs] till I gradually got down to two or three unbelievably "important"cigs a day then going cold turkey…. when my cravings were diminished…..stay full drinking lots of water and if you can get past the initial 5-10 minutes of "insanity" ….the more you do it the better you'll get…. don't let people or temporary relapse thwart your program…pick your self up, dust yourself off and don't buy any or keep them around[youll be embarrassed to "bum" only so many]…change your triggers by ignoring them at the time ,even if you break down later ie: phone, sex, driving, after dinner, when you first get up……..anything to interrupt the habit……you can do anything you really want to do……if all else fails …..get thrown in jail for 30 to 90 days……they don't allow smoking now………..if you quit now ,within a year or so it will be as if you never smoked in your "health recovery"…..your pets and or friends and family will thank you….hell, they won't let people smoke in bars, restaurants, workplaces or jail, and some outdoor places as well as some towns!!!!!!Smokers are quickly becoming extinct…….no joke intended………Good Luck………

I smoked up until I was 2 months pregnant. A good friend of mine persuaded me to exhale my cigarette smoke into a white paper towel. It turned this ugly, dark yellow color that stunk to high heaven. She told me… "that is the kind of life you're giving to your baby." Needless to say, I kicked the habit cold turkey. I know it's really hard, but just know that you've only got one life to live. Even though you may not be a pregnant woman, the same applies to everyone… smoking is is a form of s-l-o-w suicide. You are better than that! Good luck!

I smoked for about 11 years, and just quit after I found out I was pregnant. I was scared to even try to quit, because I "loved" smoking and didn't want to give it up.
What helped me enormously is http://www.whyquit.com/
The site treats smoking like any other addiction, none of this "bad habit" garbage.
I found out that the physical withdrawal from nicotine lasts about 72 hours from the last puff. I found out that when I was trying to cut down, and miserable, I was in extended withdrawals. I wasn't treating myself to 3 cigs a day, I was denying myself 17. Same thing was happening when I tried the nico gum a couple of years ago.
I was scared, but took the 72 hour plunge. By the second day, I felt better. I was totally surprised by that. By day 4, I was able to think of a cigarette without it being synonymous with "I have to smoke a cigarette."
I didn't hate cigs, I still fantasize about having "one," and I am the last person who I thought would have a positive quit experience. I haven't stopped thinking of cigs, but I don't have my brain screaming for smoke, either. The articles and videos really help me stay focused, and reading messages from other quitters make me feel better, too.
You don't need extraordinary willpower, a hatred of cigs, nicotine replacement, or prescription drugs to quit.
Good luck whatever you decide.
